Watch Out Otis!
Lens: Bigma 50-500 Camera: K5 Photo Location: texas ISO: 3200 Shutter Speed: 1/200s Aperture: F6.7
Posted By: Rupert, 09-18-2011, 04:15 PM

This guy has been hanging around my shop and rear deck for a couple of days...tried to get a shot of him yesterday but he got away before I could grab the K5. Today I got him cornered....very aggressive, he was hissing and striking furiously...a Texas Bull Snake...they are big snakes, often over 8 ft long and with a diameter like a Rattler. Non-poisonous, they are constrictors, and powerful ones at that.

I don't speak much snake, they are "low talkers" and hard to understand, and their hearing is very bad too...deaf in fact. He did say that being a Bull Snake, he was not after me but after a certain Squirrel that he heard was almost solid Bull, and would keep him in survival throughout the coming winter......Reckon who he had in mind? I relocated him, man alive those coils are powerful, he can squeeze the life out of your arm, but now he is way off in the distant woods where he can hunt for other meals and hope Otis Army doesn't hear that he was hanging around here! Better by far than what Mrs Rupert wanted for him!

Best Regards!

This one is harmless...but a Rattler this size can do real damage...and strike above the knees.....boots need to be high and thick in brush country!
Regards & Thanks!

Beautiful little critter Rupert ! I like bull snakes and black snakes, They do a number on the mouse and rat population. They like milk too. I don't mind rattle snakes as they really don't wan't much to do with people. I've never had one strike at me unless I was poking at him with a stick. But copperheads give me the willies. They are just plain mean and aggressive. I'm not too fond of blue racers trying to chase me either but if you stand your ground they lose interest pretty quickly

Eric

PS, But I imagine they can get Otis worked up pretty quick !

It was what I had mounted! Don't forget I am the one that relocated him. As a plumber I have been under homes with snakes a million times it seems....no phobia here! Snakes are mostly non-aggressive, and if you leave them alone they will do likewise. Not so in all parts of the world, but here they are fairly easy going.
Best Regards!

BTW- Otis was like Mrs Rupert...he kept yelling out "Kill him, he's a King Cobra"

Unless you get him first.
Cut into 6-8 inch pieces.
Brush with butter. Salt pepper and garlic to taste.
Wrap in in foil, bake at 350 20-30 minutes.

You're slipping in your old age Jim.....you left out the best part...."Tastes Like Chicken".
Regards!

Better than Possum, and less greasy too!

Actually, I've never eaten one that tasted like chicken. To me, they taste more like either beef or fish; depending on what they have been feeding on.

They taste a little like gator to me. I like them on the grill! With plenty of guinness to wash it down

The few times I grilled them, they dried out too much, so I went to the aluminum foil in the oven method.
I've never tried gator.

Still too dry for me....you never get a piece of dry Possum! No need to grease the pan either, they are layered in fat and make their own gravy too!
Regards!
