Level crossing

This level crossing is close to our home. I went down there at the early evening

Electric passenger train? What line or company is that?

This is the S-Bahn (commuter train) in Rostock, operated by "Deutsche Bahn" (German Railways). This is what the carriages look like when stationary:


And yes, it's an electric passenger train with a proper locomotive pulling/pushing the carriages.

Thank you for all the details.

I always admire the railway system in Europe, it's so much more advanced than our Canadian systems.

And unlike Britain I believe most European systems still believe the railway is a social transport system?

Believing they might, but... Deutsche Bahn is keen to get a shareholder company, it's only the recent economic difficulties holding them back. What they plan sounds to me like an exact copy of British Rail. What a good example to lead...

Compared to America you are right, though, the railway system really is worth consideration when travelling. However, distances are in general a lot smaller here.
