Too HDR or not?
Posted By: snappychappy, 09-29-2011, 02:38 AM

Went for a cycle ride the other morning and managed to capture my favorite scene, sunbeams. Now because of the extreme contrast in the scene I have processed the image in three ways. First the normal shot, but with levels to bring out details in the stone wall. Then with Topazadjust4 in CS5 as a HDR shot, am not usually a fan but think it works well given the extreme contrast. And finally a black and white conversion of the HDR shot.

Which do you think is best?

BW for me... but i do like the other 2.. some photogs like to over do the HDR in their photos... these here seem to me to be spot on.. just the right amount of hdr.. my 2 cents! Nice shot!

You're probably getting more opinions than you need (or want), but I think the B&W one is outstanding.

Thanks for all the positive comments folks, much appreciated. I like the B&W shot also, the sunbeams seem to stand out more in it.

#1 & #2 for sure. I like the HDR in #2...IMO, not too overdone. Tom

#1 looks more natural and warm
#2 gives a painterly effect, would be cool to add some special effect in photoshop and really make it a "painting"
#3 is also nice, but i would bump the contrast even more if that's me

I like #1. the other 2 have details that can't be seen in #1 but they lack the shadows that I expect and seem unnatural. I think it's also better because everything isn't in focus (good light in this case). The eye is lead to the sunbeam. I love how the HDR really brings out the sunbeam though. I might increase the contrast and shadows in the HDR.
