Took this photo of the core of a petrified tree log, it is estimated to be about 210 million years old and shows what appears to be the growth rings of the tree.

Nice shot. It doesn't look a year over 200 million. I have a poster somewhere that says...nothing hurries geology.

I like it, Bob - great colors and detail :-)

Geology is a great field of study to get an appreciation for time... And learning to think long term, where "long" is more than the 5-year corporate scheme... Stonehenge was just a eyeblink ago to a geologist! Even these 200MY logs are just barely teenagers You want old, head down to Oz and find yerself some Ediacaran rocks and fossils (545-600MY)... Before that are cool rocks but not much in the way of preservable life...

Kyle, thanks for commenting, always appreciated. This is quite young compared to the rest of the earth.

thanks Tom, I think this is one of the few macro shots that isn't a bug or a flower. I took one of another piece of wood, will have to find it and post later. Bob

Dave, it is quite simple, you just count the rings and multiply by the width and length of the log times pie(3.14) quadrupled by the scale of hardness on the mohs scale. Never-mind, but thanks for looking. Bob

Thanks for looking and commenting Jim, my wife and I are always amazed looking at different strata's and the upheavals of rock formations and mountains. It is just unbelievable to comprehend what it must have been like.

You are right Dave, amazing subject matter especially considering they are over 200 million years old and weigh about 200 pounds per cubic foot. Bob

Charlie, I think that might be to petrifying for many to attempt, the way it seems. Bob
