Another Shenandoah Fall Series
Camera: K-7
Posted By: kyc, 10-26-2011, 06:24 PM

Like many others, I went out to the Shenandoah National Park to photograph the foliage and other scenery. I thought I'd take my turn to share my better results with others. I had two main goals: 3x1 panorama and 16x20 waterfall posters to be framed and hung at home. I think I was successful.

Skyline Drive

Forest scene just off the road

Pano from Hogback Overlook

Lonely tree at Hazel Mountain Overlook

Dark Hollows Falls

Stony Man Summit

I was there all day Saturday and stayed overnight (tried to photograph the milky way but only got okay results). I didn't see another Pentax camera on Saturday, but the next morning while hiking up to Stony Man Summit, I bumped into a guy carrying three Pentax DSLRs!

Very beautiful series of shots!!! Did you hike the Dark Hollow Falls trail or take the fire road? That trail almost did me in back in April! LOL!

I think I like the road photo the best, I just love those types of shots and you nailed it! Looks like the colors are wonderful now!

Thanks for the compliments.
On the mention of Pentax Forums, I must confess I failed there. He wasn't there for too long and did not seem interested in talking much.

I took the usual trail along with hundreds of others.

I like the road best too, I think I'll hang that one up as my 16x20 instead of the waterfall.

Only reason I mentioned it is that 80+% of the time when I see another Pentaxian and I ask if they are on PF, they are. I've meet numerous members that way.

They have maps on the National Park Service website.

Shenandoah National Park - Driving Skyline Drive (U.S. National Park Service)

Dark Hollow Falls is a very popular hike. The trailhead is near Big Meadows. The trail goes down pretty steeply, which means it goes back up pretty steeply. I have heard that you can take the Fishers Gap overlook fire road to the bottom of the falls and that it's much less strenuous, but I have not tried it yet. Of course, if you are in good shape, like I was not, you may not mind the hike.

It was my first time there too, so I chose to go with a photo excursion (Phototour DC) led by a photographer who has scouted some of the lookouts for good opportunities. I also looked up online to see what to do since I had planned to stay overnight.

Other than the map that loco linked, you can look at the park website for suggestions of things to do. It was quite crowded last weekend when I was there, which means you can also follow the crowd by stopping whenever you see a lot of parked cars since those are clearly the popular spots.
