Hwy 88?!?! Hay, I'm on Hwy 88!! West slope, however.

For those who don't know: the Sierra Nevada range is the high spine along California's eastern edge. The west slope rises gradually; the east side is a long, often steep escarpment, in places dropping two miles / three kilometers from the crest to the rain-shadow desert beyond. Primary scenic routes are US 395, running north-south along that escarpment; CAL 88, going east-west over Kit Carson Pass; and CAL 89, climbing over astounding Monitor Pass and north past Lake Tahoe on up to volcanic Mt Lassen. The Sierras are lowest north of Tahoe, tallest further south around Yosemite and Sequoia national parks: the High Sierras.

I'm located in a boring cedar forest at 3500ft / 1050m. Uphill, Kit Carson Pass at 9000ft / 2700m slices through Aspen groves (which are all one plant!) and gnarly high-elevation conifers including a few ancient Bristlecone pines maybe. On the far side of the pass and downhill from Tahoe are the Great Basin desert valleys and ranges, and Nevada's capital Carson City. Alas, I usually don't have time for photography during our regular shopping runs there. This is all rather spectacular scenic country and I need to go wander around in it more with my camera, yes I do. I miss just camping out on the east side.

Some nice shots there, illustrating much of this landscape. Or, land-sky-mountain-scape. Good going!

RioRico,

You are so blessed to be living here - do you know of any nice locations around this area where we can find some red leaves?

About 2 weeks ago we drove over Ebbets and Kit Carson passes through Markleeville. We saw some color near Markleeville. There should be even more color around Monitor Pass on Hwy 89 between Markleeville and Topaz. We may drive up there this weekend to see for ourselves if we have the chance. Have fun!

Quick update: We drove upcountry yesterday (Saturday). A bit of color in spots along Hwy 88. The Monitor Pass / Hwy 89 route was gorgeous but it's already late autumn up there, leaves were gone. Still color around Markleeville and out to Grover Hot Springs. A splendid day for a drive.

Lake Lundy, just west of Mono Lake and east of Yosemite? Fabulous country there! Bodie, Conway Summit, Mono Lake, Lake Lundy, Lee Vining, Tioga, the Mono Craters, June Lake, all that just knocks me silly.
