Sublimely Cool Job
Posted By: Mike Cash, 12-16-2007, 06:11 AM

Worker wrapping blocks of dry ice at a dry ice factory in Tokyo's Shinagawa area. Notice the two signs topped with green crosses? One says "Safety First", while the other is an exhortation to workplace neatness. Let's hope he pays better attention to "Safety First" than he does to the other.

(Dry ice doesn't melt; it sublimates)

Thanks. I've been driving by that place for the last eight years and this was the first time traffic conspired to let me get a few photos of it. The shot was done, as usual, by rolling down the passenger window of my truck and shooting through it. The front of the dry ice establishment is wide open to the street. What you see in the photo is actually about 2/3 of their total frontage; it's a very small place, but with three floors.

How do you like the thick frost buildup on the bottom of their freezers?

Great photo Mike and as a side benefit, after a bit of googling, I know what "sublimate" means:-).

Hadn't thought about it. Would you (or anyone else) care to have a go at it? Here's a link to the large size of the photo if you would like to give it a try. I'd be very interested in seeing the result and hearing about your method.

Personally, I prefer the colour version.

Mike, the workplace is pretty neat, everything seems to be in order. Newspapers properly stacked and notices are neatly lined up. If anything, the freezers are a little rusted - presumably that's what the discolouration above the ice, indicates.

I like this type of shot - workers at work and working places. I think it is a great capture and excellent angle. It probably would have had a different effect had you shot it at eye/street level.

D.V.'s black and white rendition is pretty nice, though. I have a bad habit myself of not being able to resist throwing some sample toning onto b/w conversions, so it's a good chance for me to take a look at b/w without all my extraneous flummery.

I also noticed that the workplace is actually not messy at all, yet it is such a "busy" environment, object-wise, that it gives the initial impression of being in disarray.
