Otis's northern cousin prepares for winter

Not up to your standard Rupert, but I don't have the squirrel experience that you have and I was shooting through the bedroom window.

Caught this guy eating some seeds out of some maple keys, I guess preparing for the long, hard winter ahead.

(Yes, I know some of you live where my winter would be considered a light frost!!)

I like the Black Squirrel shots.

We have them around here also, but are pretty rare - might see only a couple a year compared to the dozens of grey and red.

Thanks for sharing - this way I can get a good look at him.

Pretty well matched around here for grey and black. I don't remember seeing any red squirrels in my area.

Aren't they a bit smaller than the grey & black variety?

Yes, the reds are about 1/3 smaller than the grey and black - but they are very aggressive. They will take charge of an area and chase all the greys away. Plus they are more destructive.

Luckily the red colony has moved away from the house into a stand of Larch trees, so we are starting to see more greys now.

To give you an idea of size, he is standing on our deck railing which is 4" wide.

And Canada.

Anyone from Europe want to post some squirrel pics here? Feel free.

Let's make this an "Otis's worldwide cousin thread" instead.
