An apple a day...
Lens: Panagor 90mm/f2.8 Camera: Pentax K-r Photo Location: Virginia ISO: 100 Aperture: F11
Posted By: loco, 11-28-2011, 04:20 PM

It's apple season in Virginia. I took a trip this weekend to Sperryville, where there is a place called Roy's Orchard. He has all kinds of apples available and Yorks are my favorites. Tart and juicy! Once I got them home, I had to get the Panagor 90 macro out and try to capture the lovely red fruit. Here are a couple shots I liked.

Hope you like these and thanks so much for looking!

Absolutely love the second picture. What are you using for lighting/background if you don't mind me asking.

Thanks so much! A simple setup. I don't have much in the way of lighting accessories yet. The apple was being held under the kitchen sink faucet. I composed so the fingers would not be visible and cropped a bit. The lighting was from a hot shoe flash with an Impact Mini Softbox over the flash head to soften the light a bit. The flash and 1/180 shutter speed overpowered most of the ambient light, producing the dark background.

Really nice photos, especially the second one.

Very imaginative way of doing it, just goes to show that the simple methods are sometimes the best.

Both shots are very nice, point being you Can't Compare Apples and Oranges. Your still-life reminds me of a painting and the 2nd photo is awash with ingenuity. Great job here on your part, I'm off to buy some oranges now. Bob

Thanks Joe! Appreciate the softbox recommendation. I've been getting a lot of use out of it! It has been a godsend for cat portraits - gets rid of that awful yellow/green cast in their pupils.

Excellent shots Loco! I love the simple but effective creativity of the second shot and the understated simplicity of the first. Well done!

Thanks so much, Marcus!

I'm glad you guys like the second shot. It feels nice when you can work around limitations in gear and still have some success.

Cool and clean, Lori - very nice: the photographic equivalent of some of Miles' great jazz from the late '50s.
