Cotton Fields
Lens: 43 ltd Camera: K-5 Photo Location: CRIT Indian Reservation, AZ
Posted By: Bob Harris, 12-09-2011, 08:20 PM

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Photo taken on the Colorado River Indian Tribe reservation in Arizona. Cotton prices are up and they have converted from alfalfa to cotton to export to China. Photos taken in b/w and color, not sure which I like best, but the b/w seems to give a different perspective. I picked a couple of the cotton bolls and this is not an easy job, fields are now cut by machine during harvest.

agreed, not sure which I like best either. both have something to offer. ON balance I tilt toward the color because the haze makes the mountains look out of focus moonscape.

Hey Bob - we see cotton fields around here, but without the dramatic backdrop. Nice shots; I prefer the color in this case, but that's because of my own bias toward B&W images that are edgey and contrasty.

I do want to point out also that . . . . . . "when them cotton balls get rotten, you caint pick very much cotton." Word to the wise.

Hey Bob, IMO the color shot of the field is better...to me it has depth.
Love the last two close-ups! Tom

Nice shots Bob, I will go with the BW as the mountains in the background have a more even tone which goes along with the entire photo.

This was the first day we had a haze in the air and I lost the definition I was looking for, but it was interesting to see how much of the area was now cotton fields. Thanks for commenting

This is such an interesting and cool series. I have never seen a cotton field so appreciate seeing them. I do like the black and white... very artistic. Seeing the pod with the cotton still in it is cool too. Thanks so much for posting these Bob.

Jer, we met a ranch owner the other night at dinner and he invited us over to see how the cotton was separated from the plant. I am going to copy your "word to the wise" down and take it over to him and tell him I got this info from a Texas gentleman buddy of mine. Hopefully this will help his crop production increase. Take care and thanks.

Thanks Tom, a brighter day would of made the color shot even better, but you are right about the depth issue. I brought the picked cotton boll home and used a macro lens to capture the closeup. What it doesn't show is how nasty the pod is, cuts very easily I will say. Thanks for taking a look and commenting.

thanks Scott, that is what I noticed when looking at the b/w, it affects the background more than anything and enhance the photo. Appreciate you looking.

That decision making reminds me of my wife when she shops for clothes, that's why I try to stay home. Thanks for looking, I think.

Lori, I figured everyone in Virginia had seen cotton fields, lots of history involving them going way back. Thanks for the kind words, always appreciated.

Nice shots Bob. I like the color pic best, but saying that I think the b&w good look outstanding if done with some hdr treatment.
