My new bird blind shots.
Lens: Pentax 55-300mm Camera: K5 Photo Location: Saugus Ma. ISO: 800
Posted By: charliezap, 01-09-2012, 03:15 PM

I spent part of the afternoon setting up a new feeder on a shepherd's hook 10ft from my basement window. In the open window I had a piece of cardboard with a hole in it and that's where I hid out to capture the unsuspecting fliers. All shots were made with the Pentax 55-300mm lens any where from 120-170mm and with the ISO at 800 with shutter @1/640 sec and in the f/5.6 range. The lighting was from the left side but the window reflected the light to the back side of the feeder.---charliezap

Honestly, you don't need a blind to shoot little birds at a feeder. I set up on a tripod about 5 feet from the feeder, with two flashes on stands about the same distance away. All were set up with Pocket Wizards, I sat inside and waited to push the button.

Neat shot you have there. Most people probably wouldn't have the set up that your using but they most likely would have a window and a piece of cardboard.---charliezap

My point was more that you don't really need to hide the camera - just yourself. If you have a long enough release cable, you're good to go.

Hi John--Since I'm just recently retired I'm trying out different techniques.Usually I go out to the main feeder and with the camera in hand from 8ft away the birds--woodpeckers--chickadees--nuthatches--titmouses-don't seem to mind me being that close.Cardinals on the other hand get spooked real easy.My next move is to put on my tree costume.---charliezap

What would a bird session be without the obligatory K5 pastel filter mode shot.--charliezap

Cool idea Charlie, glad you don't have grizzley bears in your area, I wonder what idea you would come up with then.

Charlie - great idea for a low-budget bird blind. Wonder if you can find the birds' "staging area" - where they perch before heading to the feeder. Might make for some nice "natural habitat" shots.

John - That's some great light on the chicadee!

Terry - I too would love to see more of your Snowy Owl photos!

Terry: amazing shots. I've been waiting to see one in my area, interior of BC, none so far. A friend was in Langley BC a couple weeks ago and saw quite a few. Got some very good shots. These ones look like they are on the beach.

New and learning

Yes this one is right at the beach.

It appears as though I posted to some one else's thread, still figuring the nuances out
here. Apologies to Charlie.

I will get it figured out.
