My first official day with my K5
Lens: Various Camera: Pentax K5 Photo Location: London
Posted By: Opethian, 01-22-2012, 04:39 PM

Well, it felt like a week before I got the time to try my new camera out. Walked from Marble Arch all the way to White City. Passed by Hyde Park, then Holland Park. Here are a few photos from today, "post processed" using the built-in filter effects and nothing more, just batch resized using IrfanView for web viewing.

Hyde Park Parade of Trees (DA 55-300)

Pentax SMC DA 55-300 Test Shot

Hyde Park Test Shot (Kit Lens)

Row of Birds (Kit Lens)

No Nice Sunset Today @ Holland Park (Kit Lens)

Cafe @ The Science Museum (Kit Lens)

Fly By (DA 55-300)

---

Impressions so far?

* Well, I feel like the K5 will last longer than the GX-10 I had before.
* It feels so nice to handle, but I MISS MY GRIP. I found out today that I took approx. over 60% of my shots in portrait. The camera is smaller so an official grip is an investment I will be getting in the future.
* I love the post processing or "filter" effects! It's saving me a lot of trouble doing it in Photoshop... BUT! It totally DESTROYS whatever detail you have in your photos. Looks like I'm sticking to Photoshop.
* The shutter sound! Not silent, but it sure does sound like Pentax put a silencer in there to muffle out the sound.
* I can finally use TAv mode in confidence.

Thank you for looking at the photos!

Looks like you had a pretty fantastic first day with the K5. For me the first three are full of mystique and magic.. beautiful treatment which is very much to my personal tastes. The last shot is quite something also! Best regards, Garbhán,

I'm glad that you like the K5.I kind of winced when you mentioned that the K5 filter modes "Destroys" pictures.I don't use all of them but I've had good luck with the pastel and posterization filters. In some instances it does make for a better picture by giving it a different look.Check out some of my postings and you'll find that time to time I use the filters. It's funny--some of the times a picture that may other wise fall victim to the delete button gets a 2nd life with filters. The K5 certainly has a plethora of bells and whistles and being a gadget freak I like to explore all possibilities even though I may not use them.Enjoy the K5 and I look forward to seeing more shots from you.--charliezap

Original Poster
I feel so warm after reading all your wonderful comments. If there was one thing I wish I had done on the day, that would have been to focus on one theme, or two at the most. Since I just wanted to try it out in crazy cold winds I thought I couldn't get much out of the K5, and that's after being without a camera for several months as I sold my GX-10 last year.

On second thought, I think I will be using the filters a lot! Of course, I will still be keeping the originals, but the K5 just increased its value for me because of the post processing options it has. I think it won't be long before we'd have cameras with a cut down version of Photoshop built into them (probably more as a marketing gimmick, but very possible I think!).

Thank you again everyone, I'm now inspired to go ahead with the Chinese New Year Celebrations in Chinatown London this Sunday and that Google Plus London Photowalk group next week.

I did this collage to show what the K5 can do all by itself with the filters. It's a neat camera and I wonder what the next model will have for gadgets.--charliezap
