Lens: Pentax 67 SMC 105/2.4 Camera: NEX5 Photo Location: Tokyo

Here's the rig.

I've stacked three adapters (NEX-Nikon, Nikon-P645, P645-P67) to realize my dream of using some of my bigger medium format lenses on the NEX. So the first one I tried was the Pentax Takumar SMC 105/2.4 and of course I attached the hood/loupe which I fashioned from a Pentax 67 WLF, and enjoyed shooting on a rare snowy day here in Tokyo. Here are some of the results.

Interesting.

What is the purpose of all that "stuff" on the back of the Sony?
Is it to give you a little protection from the sun and also to enlarge the lcd viewer of the sony?

Thanks for sharing,
Sam

Sam,
Yes you pretty much have it right. The NEX has no viewfinder so using it in bright conditions can be tough. Couple that with the need to do manual focus and it gets really hard. The 67 WLF makes for an excellent sun shade and if you put the loupe in place it becomes one of the largest eye level electronic view finders I've ever seen and makes critical manual focus really easy. The NEX also provides one touch MF assist magnification and their newest feature is "focus peaking" which adds a color to the focus peaks when they are perfectly in focus. All of this combines for some of the most accurate manual focusing imaginable. If someone would make a slightly less bulky and collapsible screen hood with loupe for the NEX I think it would be a very hot item.

Sorry to revive an old post but I found this while looking at NEX-7 Porn on google. I think this Frankenstein is pretty damned awesome! Ive actually been holding on to an old Bronica WLV to do something similar, but the P67 WLV fits even better! This post has actually made me question (if only for a second) my desire to purchase an NEX-7

Question: How did you attach it to the display? Is it something I can put on and take off easy, as well as still easily use on my P67?

Thanks for posting this lil-bit of awesomeness!

Hi enero,

If you want to continue using your WLF on your film body as well you won't like my solution. I bought an extra plastic protector (hard plastic type that clips onto the camera's LCD) and super-glued the WLF directly onto it. Then I used black electrical tape to cover the portion of the WLF on top and bottom that protrudes beyond the plastic protector.

It's easy to attach to the NEX5 as the whole unit just clips into place. One disadvantage is that if you want to use the hinged LCD for true waist level shooting with this contraption attached you will find that the weight of it causes the LCD to not stay in position, so you sort of have to hold it there with one finger. But for doing manual focus in bright, outdoor conditions this works really well. Of course the built in view finder of the NEX7 is much more elegant and far more compact, but this home made solution works for me.

Hey thanks for your response, I had a feeling it was going to have to be a permanent thing. Oh well. Still a great idea. and looks pretty sweet!

I always use the prism finder with my 67 so it wasn't much of a sacrifice for me.

Same here, but I dont think I have it in me to glue anything to mine. Besides it would only be for a fleeting moment of DIY fun as I hope to have an NEX7 in my life in the next week or so
