Hoar frost
Lens: DA* 50-135 & DA 55-300 Camera: K20D Photo Location: St Paul, Mn - USA ISO: 200

I woke up on Saturday to discover that we had been visited by a large amount of hoar frost - perfect for World Pentax Day! (So a few of these shots have been posted over there also.)

#1 - A well covered bush

#2 - Up close & personal

#3 - If you look close, you can see the "slivers" of the hoar frost that have fallen off the branches above this mass of frozen leaves

#4 - The park looks a little lonesome this time of year - but the trees & bushes sure looked great!.....

#5 - One more time with the bush.....

Thanks for looking.....

Tim, I have never seen this type of frost in person, I guess it is basically frost that builds upon itself, it appears so thick and way too cold. It certainly has a beauty of its own.

Actually, it's warmer than you think Bob. I think the low Saturday morning was only in the low 20's F - and then since it got up to the mid 30's F by afternoon I think all the hoar frost was pretty much gone by lunch time. I believe it's more a function of how much humidity there is out than anything else - kind of like dew in the spring & summer, only "frosted".

Newell Park in St Paul, actually.

I haven't even given Minnehaha a try this winter - what with our pathetic snow total and lack of cold I'm assuming the falls would be tough to find something "shot-worthy".

Especially like the leaves. Think they show off the subject well.

I've only seen this phenomenon a time or two, when we lived in Ohio. I remember shooting dozens of photos with my MX one morning when hoar frost and redecorated the world.

Nice job.

I like the leaves as well - we get that here once in a while - none that I have noticed this year - but it sure paints a pretty picture when it comes.
