New Year brings New Snow
Posted By: Tom Lusk, 01-01-2008, 06:36 PM

I awoke this morning to find a foot of fresh snow had fallen overnight.

Shortly after getting up (and before having breakfast) our electric power failed. This happens a couple of times each winter when a heavy snowfall downs power lines.

Not able to do anything productive, I headed outside to take a few photos:

We have one stubborn oak tree that holds its leaves through the winter:

The evergreens were weighted down with snow:

and the Sumac seed pods were decorated, too:

.

A couple of birds were holed up from the cold. This mourning dove was sound asleep:

while this goldfinch was looking for something to eat:

The light was flat and gray all day (between blizzards), but at least the hydro came back on this afternoon.

Beautiful. Amazing that you can still manage to capture birds on camera!

Happy New year!

A good start to '08 Tom - I am sure you could find some birds anywhere. That oak is amazing as well - mother nature refusing to let go. Nice series.

As always Tom, wonderful shots. 1/60 at 300mm is pretty impressive, thanks for posting them.

Take care, Heinrich

I'd say you were very productive without your electrical power Tom. That first image really grabs me. The colorful leaves in that snow and cold are a wonderful contrast.

Always love your shots

Tom,

I always love looking at your shots.. The first one is really nice.. the subtle colors of the tree mixed with the new fallen snow... I really like it...

But I LOVE #4.. The sleeping dove looks as plump and cozy as anything.. GREAT shot!!!

All great Tom, but I especially like the contrasting colours of the oak tree against the snow, and the dove (looks well fluffed up for insulation).
