Tiny Dragon Fly
Lens: Pentax D FA 50/2.8 Macro Camera: K-7 Photo Location: Garden
Posted By: cmohr, 02-11-2012, 06:31 AM

Pics taken on my K-7, ISO 640, Shutter speeds between 1/320 and 1/800 sec, F 7.1, Jpegs straight out of the K-7 only resized for upload. All Handheld, next time I'm going to stop down to F16 or so to pick up a little more DoF. By the way, The last pic is not a crop, I was "that close I could smell his breathe".

I was taking pics of this little guy this afternoon, he's about 30mm long, and was buzzing around me in the garden. He was quite obliging actually, he keep flying around then landing back on the same twigg for me, then he'd just sit there posing, I'm actually about 5-10 cm away from him..........this went on for about 5 mins and 300 photos, then I noticed something.........He's got a big grin on his face and smiling for his pictures..

Thanks elho cid, at first I was crouched there and every time I moved he was gone, but then, I just started to move very very slowly, and the little guy seemed to settle down and then just hung around and let me get with in 5cm of him. Yor right, it was really exciting when it all started to work.

Arrrrrrrrr.

Great shot, that last one is amazingly close. I enjoy photos like this, often I take things for granted and shots like this make me realize how wonderful nature is. TFS, Bob

Thanks Bob, It was my interaction with the dragon fly that was just as, or actually, more rewarding to me than the pics I ended up with, I truely felt he was having as much fun posing for his "Portrait" as I was having taking it.

I agree, nature is "Wonderful" and "Unexpected" Thank you for your comments. One of the things I've tried to do with my Photos is also convey my emotions of what I'm seeing "right there in front of me" and by your reaction, I think I had a rare success.

Remarkable work with a short lens. My dear old mum always said "take another step closer." She disliked telephoto and zoom lenses intensely.

Thanks Bruce, your Mum's a clever one. I used to do macro with my 85 and extension tubes back on film, but with the crop factor on dslr, not so much, having the the 50 is now much the same as the 85 on film, so I'm finding myself getting back to it.
