Haines has Bears
Posted By: slowpez, 02-12-2012, 08:38 AM

Our flights to Katmai kept getting cancelled due to weather so when we saw these guys in Haines it kind of made up for it.

The bear on the right was fishing in some guys tackle box and he managed to catch a hook.

This one got a little closer than I was comfortable with so I did my famous shoot and run.

Lots of people share the water with the bears

Besides bears, Haines is also very scenic

That first shot is so close to being really remarkable. I mean I would still be proud to have the chance to capture an image such as that one and perhaps the light was the greatest limitation.

Love those bear shots! Nice shooting all around, and looks like a great time. Otis mentioned that if we were up there he would command me to march out there and get that hook out of the bears mouth.......that may be a good reason why we won't be up there!
Regards!

Rupert, tell Otis that the bear's hook is off limits. Even the rangers won't take it out.
Charlie, I hope your son and his wife have as much fun as we did and get to see everything they want to see.
Matt, I agree about the lighting. We went back to see those bears everyday and the light just never improved. You can't have everything I guess but I would sure liked a little sun.
Thanks for having a look Tracy and Dave. I appreciate it.

with so many bears around, some people might forget how dangerous they are, that could be a big mistake. Love that last photo, just beautiful.

More nice shots, Susan. When I was a about 14, I almost walked right into side of a big brown mama bear - my head was . . . . . well, who knows where my head was? My mom almost passed out.

Really nice shots. That last one has been collared and tagged. Would be interesting to look at the data about his/her travels.

Thank you Lori, Bob, riff, Jer and Tom. The bears were number one on my list of things to see on the trip and I was terribly disappointed when the flights got cancelled but thankful and fascinated that there were so many in the Haines area and so close. The fishermen, by the way, were continually being chased out of the water.
