Cross Tipped Churches
Lens: Tamron 10-24 & 28-105 Camera: K20D Photo Location: Mercer County, Ohio

Yesterday I drove around Mercer County and took some photos of farms and Churches. The area is home to many large Catholic churches that were built around 1880-1910. Sorry, some of these were backlit and I really didn't have another good viewpoint. I have posted a few more over at Camera Enthusiast Forums Some of these towns are no more than crossroads.

St John the Baptist, Maria Stein, Ohio:

St Francis, near St Henry, Ohio:

St Rose's, St Rose, Ohio:

Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church, Cassella, Ohio

Former St Charles Seminary, Carthagena, Ohio (now a retirement home:

St Sebastian Church, St Sebastian, Ohio:

That is a very nice series Tom, I love the second one and the St Charles Seminary. The hydro lines in the first one wouldn't be hard to clone out. Thanks for posting the series.

I like #8 (Former St Charles Seminary, Carthagena, Ohio) and #9 (St Sebastian Church, St Sebastian, Ohio) the best. #2 is good too but might need processing to tone down the sky brightness. I think I like those photos because there's more interest in addition to the building itself. There's also minimal distractions from power lines, light poles, parked cars, etc.

Thanks John, I agree with the sky, it was so backlit the building itself was dark so I compromised a little. I just got Lightroom 3 a few days ago and have a lot to learn. I may have to do layers in Photoshop, or go back at a different time of day. There are more of these churches that I haven't seen and would like to photograph.

Tom, as said you had the back lighting problems, but I really enjoy viewing the architecture of these grand churches. As we have traveled throughout the US, one thing that we have noticed especially in the poor areas is that there is always a beautiful church somewhere in the area. Thanks for the tour, really enjoyed it. Bob

It was nice to see these. I think old churches are fascinating. The seminary is my favorite. Love the driveway leading you into the front door.

They are pretty fascinating, especially these big churches and the seminary pretty much rising from the cornfields.
