Round the World Yacht Race 2012 - Sanya, China - In the Harbour
Lens: DA*300 & Sigma 50-150 Camera: K5 Photo Location: Sanya, China
Posted By: Frogfish, 02-20-2012, 11:38 PM

To get away from cold Shanghai my wife and I took a short break in Sanya, Hai Nan Island (the Chinese call it China's Hawaii - around the same latitude as Hawaii and Florida - it's hardly that to me but it does have great weather all year round, hundreds of miles of beaches and the interior is covered in mountains, it's also where they now hold the Miss World competition each year).

On our last day there the Round the World Yacht Race 2012 arrived in Sanya, China (Sanya having sponsored one of the yachts), giving us a unique opportunity to enjoy one of the few stops the yachts make around the world (they are off to Auckland next). This is Part 1 of what will be a two or three part series.

These shots were all taken with K5s mounted with a DA*300 (with and without an AFA x1.7 = 510mm) and a Sigma 50-150. There are some heavy crops (up to 100%) for the 'action' shots

The Teams:
Team Sanya (China), Groupama (France), Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing (UAE), CAMPER (NZ), Telefónica (Spain) and PUMA Ocean Racing (USA/Aus/Germany ?), with crews from 15 different countries : -- New Zealand, Australia, France, Spain, United States, Great Britain, Ireland, South Africa, Sweden, United Arab Emirates, Germany, Norway, Brazil, China and Belgium.

You can read more about the race here : [link=http://www.volvooceanrace.com/en/home.html]link[/link]

Hope you enjoy these and thanks for looking / commenting. All C&C appreciated as this is something I've never shot before but after this event I'd like to shoot more of.

Great series.
I think #4 is awesome, that guy climbing in the mast gives an exact idea how tall that mast is. Just thinking that somebody has to do this when the sea is less calm gives me the shivers.

Nice images. Were you shooting from land, or did you get out on the water?

The race came through Cape Town at the end of November last year, but quiet a few of the 6 entries had been battered through the Atlantic ocean and had to retire from that leg. I was at the habour when Groupama arrived after making repairs along the way. Great pieces of technology. But too many $$$ needed in this type of racing nowdays and hence tiny fleet numbers.

Some 15-20 years ago, when the race was known as the Whitbread ocean race, I helped out with the leg ending procedures, mainly logging the final times crossing the official finish line. But the fleets where much larger then, and we often had 3 or 4 boats finishing per day (or any time of night) for about a week with total fleets over 20-30.

wonderful series, I can feel the spray of the salt air. These really turned out great, especially considering they were shot handheld. Thanks for sharing these Kevin, I love a day on the ocean.

Very nice photos! As a Volvo Ocean Race fan, I'm a bit envious of you!! I must say I like the one of Camper, nr 3, the most, but all of them are really good! Did you get any photos of Abu Dhabi? (That's my favorite racing team... )
Thanks for charing these!!

Thanks Andre. I'm very pleased you enjoyed the series ! That mast is just huge ... it's looks around twice the length of the boat and it must be fantastic being up there !

Interesting stuff Kevin. It is a great pity that costs now mean only a few teams can afford to enter. I was positioned on the harbour wall.

Thank you for your kind words Bob ! I have to point out I cheated and was using the harbour wall to steady my shots as much as possible

Thanks Anna ! I tried to get the Abu Dhabi yacht racing in the harbour but either a tourist vessel or one of the escort boats always got in the way of the shot. I had one of three yachts side by side (inc. Abu Dhabi) .... but a pleasure yacht got right in front of my shot just at the last second

I have some of them dockside which I'll post in a second thread soon !

Really colorful yachts. Perfect camera set-up to get those close-ups. Nice series. Can't wait to see the next two parts.
