Australian Kookaburra
Lens: Tamron 18-200 Camera: Not A Pentax Photo Location: Backyard
Posted By: Barnster, 02-23-2012, 05:04 PM

This is the famous laughing Australian bird ,The kookaburra.He/she was perched in the middle of the day on this plank in my yard with a worm or twig in it's mouth. So I had to be quick to get a shot in before it flew away, and unfortanely I didn't have a long lens on the K100D,so I had to use the other brand name that did.But still,I wanted to share these few images with you all. These would have to be one of my favourite Australian bird.

Looks like you got reasonably close! It also looks like he's been feeding on muddy ground, judging by the dirt on his beak - and it looks like the feathers on his head might be slightly muddy as well. Sometimes they dig nests in termite nests in trees, so that's another possible reason he could have a dirty beak. I always laugh when I watch an American-made TV show (the old Tarzan series was especially guilty) which uses Kookaburra calls as background noise in jungle scenes. Funny because there's no Kookaburras in Africa and even in Australia they don't live in rainforest!

Good to see you caught so much detail in these shots.

There's your problem right there. The colours in this one are washed out and muddy brown. If only you'd had the K100 at the ready, then we'd have a great shot of this magnificent fire-engine red bird with the blue eyes.

Regards

Hi

Where I play golf there are quite a number of them in the morning and I am sure they are watching me with their beady little eyes. Every time I miss a shot these cheeky little buggers laugh heir heads off. One starts off and the others follow. I am sure they are mocking me. Puts me off my stroke, it does.

Greetings

We are lucky enough to have Kookaburras in our backyard too... they look nice, but it is the famous laugh that make them special

In Cape York we get this blue winged version - they all have some blue in the wings but this race has 50% plus blue - they don't laugh - rather more like a coughing dog bark - odd to hear the first time.

Try as I might, I have never been able to get close enough for a clear shot of our beloved Kookaburra's.

They are only here in the mountains seasonal, these are great captures, will spur me on to try harder.
