Few from the Quicksilver Surfing Pro
Lens: Sigma 300/2.8 + 1.4x TC Camera: Pentax K-5 Photo Location: Gold Coast Australia
Posted By: cmohr, 02-26-2012, 03:56 AM

I stopped in for an hour this arvo at Snapper Rock to have a quick look at the Qucksilver Pro. Took a few keepers I think... All shot with the K-5 and the Sigma APO 300/2.8 with the Sigma APO 1.4xTC, I originally had the 2xTC on, but that was too close and I couldn't fit the surfers in frame. All shots jpegs out of the camera, the ones with the Red shirt I had to actually adjust grey balance a tiny bit, otherwise pretty happy. Love the way the catures of the water in some of them. I'll be heading back again if I can next weekend, I'll get there earlier than 3pm..

Great shots, nice and sharp, i've been waiting to see some shots with the Sigma APO TC, is the Sigma 300/2.8 HSM? I've been looking to get the 1.4xTC to use with Sigma 70-200/2.8 HSM for sport.

Thanks , I'm particularly happy with the results from the Sigma and the matching APO TC's and, No, not HSM, the Sigma 300 is screwdrive, and so are the TC's and had no problems Tracking and keeping AF with it as I followed the action.

Nice and sharp. Like them all but I can't take my off the patterns the waves and surfers made in the water. Great action shots and thanks for sharing them.

Thanks Susan, actually it was the water I was more interested in.....I'm going to do so "Just Waves" breaking stuff next time as freezing water always produces great stuff.

Thanks for your comments.

Thanks Cee Cee, thats actually why that shot is here, not so much "action" going on with the surfer, but, the Wave is very cool..

Thanks again for the comments guys, I myself am very impressed with how clear and sharp the pics are, and these are the resized versions that I did in "Paint" of all programs, and still they look great. Still impressed with the AF performance of the K-5, as it was following focus on the subject, (remember these guys are not only going at terrific speed across the wave front, but the wave is also rushing forwards towards the camera (generally faster than a person can run on land), I was actually standing knee deep in the surf as well, and at 6'2 knee deep for me is almost waist deep for most around me I can't wait till next weekend to get back down there for some more action, I'll also be there for the Roxy Womens Pro as well.

Nice shots! I watched the comp live on the web but with your shots you can feel the intensity of the surfers!
