Chess by oil lamp (in-camera HDR)
Lens: Panagor 90mm/f2.8 Camera: Pentax K-r Photo Location: Virginia ISO: 100 Shutter Speed: 1s Aperture: F16
Posted By: loco, 02-27-2012, 05:23 PM

A Flickr friend of mine found a small glass chess set at her local recycling center and remembered I had a fondness for chess set photos. She also remembered I'd had to borrow a chess set from a co-worker to take the photos. So, she picked up this lovely little glass chess set and sent it to me. Isn't that thoughtful? People can be awfully nice sometimes!

I decided to try something a little different for me and lit my olive oil "lamp" (a wick in a jar!). I used the K-r's in-camera HDR function for this shot and then converted to black and white.

Thanks so much for looking and I hope you like it.

Very nice, like the composition as well as the razor sharp clarity.

I admit I'm not much into HDR, but this is a great shot, Lori! The reflections and unusual tones really give this a very cool vibe

Yeah, I know the feeling. It has worked well for me in certain situations, though. Thought I'd give it another try. Very pleased you like it, Paul!

Totally awesome photo, not much more than I can say, except I am going to give HDR a chance. I'm jealous.:ugh:

Thank you so much, Bob! You are always so kind and generous with your comments and support! Much appreciated.

As for HDR, I don't have any software to use for traditional HDR, so I just occasionally use the in-camera function. It works OK in certain situations. In the color version of this shot, the flame looks quite weird. That was why I converted to B/W.

Cool idea Lori, beautifully executed. I wonder if there's a way to illuminate the board without the candle in the background but outside the frame. Might be worth a try, if such a thing is possible.

Thank you, Jer! I actually took a bunch of shots like that and some are in my Flickr photostream. I kind of liked how this one turned out best, but those are interesting if you want to look at them. The link is in my sig. I appreciate you taking the time to comment and make that suggestion!

Hey Lori - I looked at your Flicker page and found the other shots to be delightful. I especially like the one that centers on the two warring knights with the candle flame behind them (not at all what I suggested in my original reply ). I think you ought to post it here too (in a thread of its own) - either as it is, a B&W conversion or both. Super job.

Awww, thanks so much for looking at them, Jer! That's kind of you to say! I'll have to think about making another thread. I don't want to bore people with my chess shots, though! So pleased that you liked them and that one in particular!
