When I first saw the thread name I thought, HAY! I USED TO WORK IN THE GARLOCK PLANT IN PALMYRA NEW YORK! but then I saw that the pix are of the old mining town from whence came raw materials -- no shots of the Erie Canal or Hill Cumorah. Ratz. At Garlock/Palmyra I tended machines that braided asbestos and/or metal fibres into cables, often impregnated with oils, to use as packing inside motors and similar gear. Garlock/California was a company town feeding the industrial gullet back East. Back in the West, I spent some time wandering the gold towns of Red Mountain and Randsburg (sited on a nice desert mountain) and tended to ignore plebian Garlock. Gotta be there when the light is right, as you were.
Personal note: I wouldn't be here on PFC if not for my time at Garlock/Palmyra. Palmyra NY is where I found the camera that led to my obsession with photography. [1934 German Kodak Retina folder, the first 135/FF camera.] If not for that, I might be a conceptual artist now. [Conceptual artist: one who can't draw, paint, sculpt, or compose.]
