White Dove of the Desert
Posted By: slowpez, 03-03-2012, 08:29 AM

Just outside of Tucson you will find The White Dove of the Desert or the old Mission San Xavier del Bac. It is one of the most beautiful we have seen (and we have seen a lot of old missions.) Hope you enjoy these.

Very nice. I love the way the white buildings stand out against the blue sky. Well done.

It's a beautiful mission and your photography represents it so well. They have done a great job restoring and keeping up with the maintenance, it is a real treasure to view.

Thanks all. There is still a missing cupola on the one tower but it doesn't diminish its beauty.

Susan, WPRESTO wrote the following in a thread I had last year and interesting I thought. Here is a link to my thread and take a look at the last photo right after your post. In fact this may have been one of the last posts you made before going on vacation?

For those who don't know, or if this little tidbit isn't in the history of the mission, if you look very closely at the first shot, in the upper part of the dark, carved facade, there are two curls that curve inward. Atop the left curl you can just see the figure of an animal. It's a cat. On the right curl there's an image of a mouse. The legend is: when that cat catches the mouse, eternity will begin.

Thanks to both you, Bob, and WPRESTO for the info. I have forgotten about your thread Bob. Nice to know that great minds travel to the same great places.
Thanks for having a look Jer and Den.
