The birds and the beast...
Posted By: Tom Lusk, 12-26-2006, 02:37 PM

A couple of shots of today's backyard critters:

A wet Blue Jay

The ever-popular chickadee!

Another jay, listening...

a Junco eating a ???

and finally - the beast, a wet one.

Some day I'll get good shooting conditions- I hope. I'm tired of dull, gloomy light.

Tom you have the most amazing backyard. Really nice shots. That #3 Jay photo looks like he is eyeballing you. Thanks for the post. It is easy to appreciate your skill.

I wished I had the backyard of yours and half your talent

I love them all and blue jays are truely beautiful.

I actually find cloudy day better for birding photography as less shadows are likely to ruin the photos. Pentax lenses do bring out a lot richer colour when the lighting is poor (especially diffuse light from a cloudy day).

I enjoy your birding shots as always.

The junco is eating a red worm?

Thanks for these amazing photos

Wondereful shots!

I too like the second Bluejay. Beautiful birds.

My wife has installed several bird feeders in the backyard of our new house here in Arkansas and it's always loaded with birds. When the Bluejays are around they chase away all the others.

Can't wait for my K10 gets here so I can start a new hobby; birdwatching and bird photography.

Thanks for posting,

Dan

Thanks!

Thanks for the comments, everyone.

Quaffle- these were taken with my FA*300 f/4. The light was so bad I was forced to shoot at 1/30th or go to ISO 400 and above. Thank goodness for SR! A tripod is really not a good option in most of these bird situations.

I do have the best back yard I could dream of. Right on a river, at the mouth of a shallow bay- lots of wildlife year-round. I give thanks every day.
