Cactus Candy
Lens: 50mm f/2.8 macro Camera: Kx Photo Location: Arizona
Posted By: Bob Harris, 03-16-2012, 10:33 PM

Took a walk out into the desert today to find some cactus in bloom and I found some beauties. Shown are the prickly pear, cholla and barrel. Spring is here in the desert of Ehrenberg, Arizona.

EM, here is another shot of the Prickly Pair I found, this is going to really be something when all the blooms are open.

Very, very nice images Bob, way back in the fifties someone gave me an illustrated book called "the desert is alive", these images remind me of it. Thanks for showing us.

Den, some of that CA rain spilled into AZ tonight, this is going to be a wonderful wildflower year I think. Thanks for looking, Bob

thanks for commenting Heinrich, and you are right, the desert is alive. Often people just drive by on the freeways just thinking how brown and dead it looks. They have to get off the highways and explore a little bit to find these treasures. Have a great year in the RV this year. Bob

Nice set Bob -- I especially like that close-up of the cholla flower. I think your Prickly Pear is actually a Beavertail Cactus, notable for lacking spines. I love the desert in bloom and wish I could be there!

Even closer -- same genus (Opuntia), which includes not only the Beavertail but also all (?) the chollas. Actually all the cacti are in the same family. But within that it can get confusing (to me at least, as we only have one native species here) -- for example there are various "barrel" cacti but not all in the same genus.

thank you Tom, with the gas prices, it is a bit more reasonable to view online than coming out west.
