Warmest day yet here today. It reached 20c, sunny, felt like mid-May. One of our old chickens decided she was going to burrow down in their favourite dusting spot. She melted like a cat in the heat, thoroughly enjoying it. I've never seen a chicken so enthralled, usually they're so... mechanical in their movements and reactions.

No, she's not dead! Just looks like it.

I think she heard my noisy shutter.

Aye, she is a nice colour. Thanks. I just thought it was amusing. Rolling around on her back there for a good hour.

Dusting off the mites maybe? She does look pretty relaxed and that makes for a good (and a bit unusual) shot.

I'm glad you put that caption for the first photo otherwise I'd have thought she WAS dead.

I've never seen a chicken look like that and still be alive. Impressive.

Yep, that's definitely what the behaviour is for, but they do it for pleasure, too. Thanks.

Nice shot. What breed is she? I love taking pictures of my chickens.
She's a Red Star, older hen now. She had pet status with the woman we took her in from, so we added her to our little flock on those terms. She's still laying well though, after a fairly lengthy winter break. We also have Welsummers and Cuckoo Marans, and I've got a dozen silkies on order. What breeds do you keep?

Seriously. They don't get much more relaxed than that.

That pair of images with your title for the thread really tells the story! Great stuff... I've never thought of chickens as springtime hedonists before!
