Yellow Head Blackbirds?
Lens: 80-320 tele Camera: K-5 Photo Location: Arizona
Posted By: Bob Harris, 03-22-2012, 10:55 PM

Along with the hummingbirds migrating through the area along the Colorado River, these birds stopped in for 2 days and the photos I posted were concentrated on one bird who seemed to be the leader. While others flew around and searched for positions in the tree, he only moved once and that was only about a foot while I was watching the birds. He seemed to look with curiousity or humor at his traveling band of friends.

Very nice. I've never seen this variety before. I see a couple that look like red winged blackbirds.

Excellent! I don't think I've ever seen the yellow-headed variety -- strictly a Westerner. Interestingly, from Sibley I learn that the yellow-headed is related to Meadowlarks, but they tend to hang out with other blackbirds.

Cool pictures Bob, that are indeed Yellow-headed Blackbirds and Red-winged blackbirds but that are all males, what happened to the females? Thanks for showing us these.

It looks like there are also a couple of male Brown-headed Cowbirds (Molothrus ater) in the flock. They're the ones with the slight brown iridescence on their heads.

The larger birds we have seen here are great-tailed grackles, but this is the first of the yellow heads we have ever seen. I haven't seen any scrub jays here either Den, must be at your home.

Jeff, all of these different bird species and groups really confuses me. I do know about "Meadowlark Lemon", of the Harlem Globetrotters though.
