Porch rail birds.
Lens: DA*60-250 with 1.7 TC Camera: K-5 Photo Location: Whitney On, Canada ISO: 400 Shutter Speed: 1/125s Aperture: F8

We finally got a nice sunny day. I put some seed out on the porch rail for the usual suspects.

The goldfinches are losing their winter plumage and are starting to have gold splotches, they'll look better in a month or two.

With the 1.7 TC on, the Grosbeak and Blue jay barely fit the frame.

Male Grosbeak

Female Grosbeak

Woodpecker

Very nice set Norm. That male Grosbeak is quite different to the Oriental Grosbeaks we have over here.

Thanks rsn ret, The 18-135 lens is good for walking around but this is an entirely different set up.

We have a Rose Chested Rose beak here too Frogfish, but for some reason they don't come to our feeder. I see lots of pictures taken of them close to here though.

Thanks charlie, I use the "if you don't like your pictures, get closer " philosophy on these. It won't be long before those gold finches are back in full bloom.

Nice set of grosbeaks there Norm. Can't wait to see the goldfinches in full glory. They are one of nature's prettiest.

I'm really tempted to go down in the basement and get the beer fridge and take a picture for you with me sitting beside it, but I'm thinking I'll just leave that to your imagination. The great thing about this set up is, I can open the windows in front of this. This time of year there are no screens in them, so I'm not even shooting through glass. We tried leaving the front door open once but a woodpecker flew into the house. So far no problem with the window.

I like those Norm....in particular the female Grosbeak...nice shooting. I often sit at Mrs Rupert's desk and shoot out her picture window. The loss in IQ through the double glass is hardly noticeable if I keep i t clean!

Regards!

Norm, I think you're being too heavy-handed with the sharpening.

Really?

You like this (no sharpening at all). The image was so sharp when I turned up the definition it immediately caused banding and had to be completely turned off. There is no spot sharpening on the original. Usually I sharpen the whole image and then spot sharpen the bird.

more than this..

There is just not that much sharpening on them. Even with the 1.7 TC on , the DA*60-250 gives you very sharp images. But I suppose you could prefer the top to the bottom.

Great pics Norm. I like the grosbeaks, if we have them in NW Ohio, I never see them, but then I see something new every month, just being more observant.
