A try with black and white photography
Posted By: ftpaddict, 01-11-2008, 06:04 PM

All with a Praktica LTL3 and a slew of old M42 lenses. We have to make due with what we have.
Ok, I admit, the first one was taken with a Pentax Optio S.

Very nice Dan,

I like the top one the best.

Would you mind telling me what film you used?
And did you do the developing yourself, or did you just scan the negative?

Thanks in advance.

Why can't you get shots like that in the US Oceanic?

You've got streets, cars, all sorts of motorcycles, and B&W film all readily available.
All that it takes is a little creativity, at the right place and time.
Which could be on just about any street any nice summer day.

I used Fomapan 200 film (it's Czech), made by Foma (guess where)

I wish I could say I did the developing myself, but no. I had it developed by professionals (and paid reaaaally good money for that), and then had them scanned by the same people. I really wish I had a place to develop my own stock, but emulsions are ridiculously expensive here. Plus, working with panchromatic film can be tricky.

I don't know what camera you're using, but if I was able to pull it off using nothing but manual focus, manual exposure and a 135mm lens, I'm sure you'd have no problems.

Thank you very much Dan.

Those professionals did a really nice job at developing.

I've seen several peoples work get ruined, by the wrong person.
I shouldn't really say ruined, but when they adjust the image properties attempting to bring out the background, and in turn blow out the sky it just isn't right.

I have a good working relationship with the local camera store, and they are actually allowing me to clean out their darkroom, which they don't use anymore. Plus teaching me how to develop B&W

I wouldn't be surprised if you can work out something like it as well.

They work out nicely. The contrast high and the mood is definitely there.

I wish it was that easy. I live in Romania, you see. People here don't exactly like to trade.

@distorted_vision & roentarre - thank you. That's the way I like them.

I like the second photo the most . Nicely done .

I read somewhere that Pratika , Yashica were the "Poor Man's Pentax " . But then I was not around then .

I might give this Foma film a try .

You are not far from the truth. I can't vouch for Yashica, but I know that my Prakticas are built like tanks. The only thing that can outlive them is the Zenit-E.
I'd suggest sticking to Ilford or Neopan.

Zenit-E is quite a camera from my readings . In my search for cheap good old lenses I ran into all kind of fun history . I guess once upon a time , Pentax was quite expensive . Heck I thought Pentax is Poor Man's camera already .

I have a few rolls of Ilford XP2 , I like it . The local lab can do it cheap but still good . I just found one "pro" lab nearby , 30 minutes away , that will do all kind of films without mailing them out . They also sell films that people ordered but won't pick up ! The catch is you buy a whole order at a time . Say tens roll they have then I will have to buy it to get the reduced price . Not bad . In fact I just get some Neopan Acros 100 . Can't way to try them out . If they do have Foma then I might snatch it too

Thanks for you info . Keep up the good works .
