Return of the goldfinches
Lens: 55-300 Pentax Camera: K5 Photo Location: Saugus Ma ISO: 800 Shutter Speed: 1/500s Aperture: F8

Nature is coming back with all her colors. The goldfinches were shot from 50ft away with the 55-300 pentax lens.As you can see I taped off some of the openings in the larger seed feeder. If I didn't I would be filling it everyday when the bigger birds are feeding..--charliezap

If the hummers show up Bob I think that the 55-300mm lens would do nicely from 10ft away at around f/8.Wishful hopes.--charliezap

Nice shots Charlie - they are starting to pop up over here now, I have a finch sock out hanging, hopefully I can get a few snaps of these colorful birds...

How much are you cropping? I don't like to shoot Goldfinches more than 20 feet away. Even then I have to crop.

Here's the original shot from 50ft at 260mm with the Pentax 55-300.It holds together nicely with the cropping.---charliezap

I don't know if my old eyes are deceiving me but the cropped one seems a lot sharper than the original.--charliezap

This was shot from about 20 feet. The 12MP original was cropped to 7.7MP.

This one was cropped to 7MP.

It's the only way the birds around here can get any seed at all. The squirrels will clean out a feeder in a few hours.

You just need a few border collies.

Charlie, your finches look to be about the same stage of development as ours. They really look good on that blue feeder.

There's one who lives next door but we have an unfenced yard so he has to be leashed when he comes over

I added the thistle feeder a couple of days ago and the goldfinches are dining quite well.I'll see if I can get closer to them even though they can be a bit skittish.--charliezap
