Portrait... of a Dog
Posted By: emilf, 01-12-2008, 10:21 PM

I can't get anyone around here to let me take their portrait except for our yellow lab. On the other hand he's an absolute ham and just loves the attention.

I just used the natural light at the window, which in combination with how bright his fur is makes the background so underexposed that it almost looks like I have a backdrop. I did have to use 'levels' a little bit to cover a few brighter items in the background.

As for the B&W conversion it was using 'Black & White' in CS3 with a red filter.

Beyond that there really wasn't anything else done.

Please don't be shy with the criticism - I really want to learn.

Exif: *ist D, 43mm 1/250th F8 ISO200
Lens: 18-55 DA

Beautiful dog, tack sharp and I love the lighting and the conversion. Great job. Sorry but I have no criticism for this wonderful pic:-).

I looked at the exif data, this was taken with the FA 43 Limited? When I first viewed the pic I thought FA 50/1.4 but this lens is stunning. I can't wait to see your pics after you've "learned" more!

I just added the exif info for easier viewing. It was actually taken with a lowly 18-55mm F3.5-5.6AL kit lens.

Lol, the kit lens strikes again. It just goes to show it's more about the photographer than the lens.

Beautiful picture. If it were me, I would get rid of that odd white hair; my eye went right to it.

It just doesn't get any better than this. Great capture, excellent B&W conversion. The dog looks so noble. I love the gloss of his wet nose. I light the lighting (care to share)

Yeah - you're right. It does attract a little too much attention. I ended up just removing it.

The lighting is just natural lighting through the window. I was actually trying to get some shots of our black dog (shiny fur), so I had been playing with the blinds to regulate the amount of light that was coming in. He is pretty much looking straight at the windows when it was taken.

As for the treats - I consider the photos the cost of all the treats he's already been getting Besides - he loves the attention.

I figured I'd also post the color version. I like the original B&W since there's a good contrast between fur and black background, however the color version is not too bad either.
