Snake!!
Lens: Tair 3 300mm F4.5 Preset Camera: Pentax K20D Photo Location: Northern Colorado ISO: 100 Aperture: F5.6

I went for a hike today in Castlewood Canyon. Up on the rimrock I came up on a nice little Diamondback Rattlesnake.

He was nice enough to pose for the camera.

First one is the winner, IMO.
Nice work. A 300 eh - I can understand why.
Thanks for sharing.

WOW! I don't if I would have stayed to take pics or run away. Then again I'm pretty inexperienced with snakes.

All three are great, but the last is a classic image of a rattlesnake!

Thanks everyone! I was at the minimum focus distance for the Tair 3 (actually had to move back a little ), so I was about 10 feet away. It was just a small rattler so he didn't have much reach if he did decide to strike.

It is a good idea to give any rattler a wide berth though. The small ones are actually more dangerous than adult rattlers as they haven't learned to meter their venom yet, so they inject all the venom they have in every bite.

Boy-Oh-Boy - these are terrific. Supper sharp - a 10 on a . . . . . scale. . . . . of 1-to-10.

Very nice shots. In my hands, the Pentax shake reduction would have been put to the test.
