How well I remember the 3 cylinder, two cycle Saabs and the distinctive sound of that oddball engine, as well as the smell that poorly maintained ones left in their wake.

Yes, back in the 60's when I was in college (shouldn't give such hints about my age). They were sometimes called "the egg." Famous then for doing well in cross-country competitions that went through some ice/snow at a time when few other cars had fwd. That type of racing was popular in Europe, but in USA NASCAR was the thing (still is) and 90% of automotive competition was (and still is) on paved ovals or straight lines of 1/4 mile. Saabs were never competitive on either.

What model is that? 92, early 96? I used to drive my dad's 96. A unique car, no doubt about that.

Is this the same SAAB that makes the Gripen? I didn't even knew they made cars.

Yes, the same company. They made cars for decades until they went belly up last year.

Nice photo of a very nice car. Years ago I had a '62 Volvo PV 544 with the B18s engine. Another Swedish car that did well in sportscar racing and rallies back then.

After Volvo they are the most classic car maker in Sweden but their time with GM as an owner didn't go well. GM stopped every attempt to save the company.

BTW, before Gripen their fighter planes included models called Viggen and the smaller Draken. When I was a kid, our national air force used Drakens and I saw them almost on a daily basis flying above.

This is a great photo. The car looks in pristine condition and from this angle of view it also reminds me of the Alfa GTA... The car division of Saab was separated from the parent company when GM bought it. So any recent Saab cars were not made by the company that makes the Gripen... And then, GM made its best effort to destroy the car company. The rest is history...

yeah, the Saab aerospace company is still doing well while the Saab car company is in receivership. A real shame! There were fighter-jet inspired car models like the 9-3 Viggen back in the day though there was never one named after the Gripen

Sorry for jumping into your thread, but I couldn't help myself.

This sits in the display area at the specialist where I get my car serviced.

Before the 9-3 Viggen, the performance model was the 900 Aero. This was before GM started to destroy the brand

Hmmm. It does have competition for better rear end

If you want to win races in your Saab, you can build a carbon fibre body and add a 360 Chev racing engine. It won't be cheap

Richard.
