Midnight Macros
Posted By: Bob Harris, 04-30-2012, 08:57 PM

The photos are from our campground desert garden. I felt honored to happen to be staying there when this Argentine Giant cactus started blooming. This is quite an unusual cactus, it opens up during the night providing a very fragrant smell and huge 8 inch blooms and starts to close at daybreak. These bright colored petals and yellow centers attract night pollinators such as bats and insects such as moths and each bloom only lasts for a couple of days and fade away. The last photo was taken during the daylight and the bloom was drying up and did not bloom again. Lucky me I felt to get the photos when I did, enjoy this unusual beauty.

thanks buddy, yeah I used the camera flash and Terri used a flashlight to help light up the cactus, sort of a team effort on this one.

You're too kind Bruce, I was really excited to get the shots here, another day and I would have had to wait until next year and probably wouldn't be in the area. Life is good.

How lucky for you to be there at the right time, and how lucky for us you made the effort to get these great shots. #3 and #4 are amazing, and #5 shows how ephemeral this flower is.
thank you Jeff for the kind words, when I was taking the photos I was thinking "don't screw this up" so I was quite happy when I uploaded the photos. Yes you're right about #5, That's All Folks.

thanks Charlie, I really felt privileged to see and photograph this cactus, it even cut into my Merlot relaxing period that night, the sacrifices we make.

omg omg omg ... these are simply glorious!! Bob, your macros are outstanding and the flower absolutely stunning. You might want to submit these along with the narrative to a horticultural or tourist magazine. Thanks so much for sharing

thank you Tess, one of these days I will have to put some of my photos into some type of galley or best of box. Hadn't thought about sharing with anyone else other than with family, friends and forum. The 3 F's.
