Midnight Macros
Lens: 50mm f/2.8 Camera: Kx Photo Location: Pahrump, NV

The photos are from our campground desert garden. I felt honored to happen to be staying there when this Argentine Giant cactus started blooming. This is quite an unusual cactus, it opens up during the night providing a very fragrant smell and huge 8 inch blooms and starts to close at daybreak. These bright colored petals and yellow centers attract night pollinators such as bats and insects such as moths and each bloom only lasts for a couple of days and fade away. The last photo was taken during the daylight and the bloom was drying up and did not bloom again. Lucky me I felt to get the photos when I did, enjoy this unusual beauty.

How lucky for you to be there at the right time, and how lucky for us you made the effort to get these great shots. #3 and #4 are amazing, and #5 shows how ephemeral this flower is.

Great shots of those night-blooming cacti. One time while out with a group, we were roused to see a different night-bloomer, but our leader couldn't find one! An hour or so tramping through about with flashlights, but the sky, as so often in deserts, was glorious.
