Macro with a mystery
Posted By: charliezap, 05-01-2012, 08:13 AM

Yesterday I was happy to bag my first spider of the new season.I don't know what type of spider it is but I'm more surprised by the very small bug behind the spider. The spider is only 1/4" lg (6-7mm) and the other guy has to be really tiny.It looks like it has wings. Is there an entomologist in the house?

Yep, sure looks like a tick. Might be the kind that carries Lyme disease, the deer tick, but I can't be sure. This site has good info.

Not sure, but I think I saw the larger spider destroy cities back in the 50's if I remember correctly.

Great catch, Capn. As if the little bug were pestering the spider.

Great shot
Maybe next time I'll look and see if the spider is being trailed. As I said the spider himself is only 1/4" lg and his friend --who knows.--charliezap

Maybe the little guy is a weevil of some sort.....the long snout looks like a weevil's snout? Get more spiders....I love spiders!

Regards!

Hm. Arachnids (ie ticks) have 8 legs. This has 6. Mite I think is wrong too, though. I think Bruce identified it most accurately: lunch.

I agree,it looks like a tick ready to jump on and latch itself to the spider.

Most species of mites begin as 6-legged larvae, and become 8-legged as adults...

That explains a lot.Do spiders go after ticks? It intrigues me why he is so close to the spider.--charliezap

The spider kind of looks like Carrhotus xanthogramma but I canīt say for sure of course...

I donīt have an answer about these mites, in summer time I see a lot of insects and spiders with multiple "hitchhikers", I have never considered a spider could eat them.

CZ and others. Not a tick, and also not a mite such as the one on the leg of the spider posted by KyPainter. Looks like an insect, but not one familiar to me. KP's spider & mite remind me of this bit of doggerel:
"Spiders have mites upon them that bite them,
and the mites have microbes, and so ad infinitum."

They might not know. There's at least one entomologist member in the forum. Maybe he'll look in and provide as good an id as possible with such an image.
