Macro with a mystery
Lens: 100mm wr Pentax Camera: K5 Photo Location: Saugus Ma. ISO: 200 Shutter Speed: 1/90s Aperture: F19

Yesterday I was happy to bag my first spider of the new season.I don't know what type of spider it is but I'm more surprised by the very small bug behind the spider. The spider is only 1/4" lg (6-7mm) and the other guy has to be really tiny.It looks like it has wings. Is there an entomologist in the house?

It looks entirely different than the spider, but then it has the same general color scheme, and bugs can change shape as they mature... could it be a baby?

It maybe a baby but it looks like it has wings or is that an illusion. Here's a cropped look at it.The IQ is not that good.He is so small and out of focus range.--charliezap

Balance of probability would suggest insect (beetle) rather than arachnid (6 legs), although maybe 2 are hidden, or it's a mite of the 6 legged variety... hard to tell it's not really clear enough

The spider is a type of jumping spider. The small insect looks like some kind of tick to me. Anyway, it's an excellent capture.

Not sure, but I think I saw the larger spider destroy cities back in the 50's if I remember correctly.

Today is a crappy raw dank day here in the Boston area.I'll see if he reappears in a day or 2 and is willing to pose for a few shots.---charliezap

Great catch, Capn. As if the little bug were pestering the spider.

I was chasing this jumping spider the day I got my macro flash. When I saw him catch an insect and start eating it I thought it might make an interesting shot. Imagine my surprise when I got the photo on my pc and saw that the predator was also prey. Could your red bug be an adult version of mine? My spider was close to 1/2" long.
