I couldn't quite get the lens adjusted so it was sharp.

nice shot Robb, especially considering it is from down under, probably further away. TFS, Bob

Thanks Bob! I wish I'd been able to catch it when it was a bit lower in the sky but at least the air was clear in the cold weather!

Interestingly, I took a few more pics at moonrise tonight, and I found that the combination of the Pentax DA 55-300 on the K200 resulted in more useful image data than the ProOptic 500mm mirror lens on the K7.

This is the DA 55-300 on the K200

This is the ProOptic on the K7

Just to be on the safe side, I might check the raw images - these were resized from the camera jpegs.

Your first image is much better than the ones at moonrise. I had the same experience tonight. The ones taken at moonrise were quite disappointing but when the moon was much higher in the sky and much brighter, the images improved considerably.

That makes sense, since with the moon overhead, there's much less atmosphere in between. However, I had to do quite a bit of post processing to get it looking that good, while the photo with the K200 and DA 55-300 required almost no post processing. Thanks for the feedback! I was disappointed that the K7 exhibited so much noise even with the camera at 100ISO.

Your moon is upside down! Of course being down under things tend to be upside down, don't they?

I thought it was things in the north that were upside down? Somehow I also managed to get a mirror image horizontally (check the position of Tycho).
