the Kx @ Death Valley
Lens: 50-200mm tele Camera: Kx Photo Location: Death Valley
Posted By: Bob Harris, 05-06-2012, 07:34 PM

The last month, we have posted several threads on different parts of Death Valley using the K-5 and an assortment of lens and also Terri's Optio A40 point/shoot thread. I decided to shoot Death Valley using only the Kx and kit lens to see how it would stand up to not only my photos but others that I have viewed. Here are five of many photos that I took, hope you enjoy the view from the Kx.

Well, let me be the first to criticize and say that image #3 isn't quite as stunning as the other four.

I suspect we could give you a pinhole camera and you'd still produce the magic.

The first photo would look great on a wall print.

I'd say these stand up pretty well, Bob. And that DA50-200 isn't looking too shabby either! Agree with the above poster about a wall print from #1 - beautiful/

Hi Bob, you seem to have a good copy of the DA L 50-200. I must say, I would not want to be left alone in that place; it seems as if not much can stay alive in that valley for long.

Oh Bob these are terrific! I love them all but the first and last really sing!! I love my kx and using the kx and k5 interchangeably I find the real difference comes during the soft light of early morning, but then again, I got some amazing photos from the soft light of dusk the other night with my Kx so who knows.

I am with MSL on this, you can create magic with whatever you are shooting with. Thanks for Sharing

Wanted: Pinhole camera for comparison reasons.

Thanks Marc, here is a link to basically the same shot of the valley floor using the K5 and 70mm and I think there is a major difference in the photos . I am not taking in effect the day, lighting etc but they are close. thanks for the kind words. DV is a very magical area to photograph.

Happy to trade you a pinhole camera for your Kx. I'm not asking for your K5 as I already have one of those, and I don't want to be seen as being greedy.

I agree with you that the factor here is angle/composition. The image here isn't bad, but the one from your other set captures more of the awe/awesomeness of the landscape.

Quite a difference in vertical rise in this photo, the valley floor is below sea level and Telescope Peak is over 11,000'. thank you for commenting. Bob

Paul, I use this lens on the K5 quite a bit as a walk around with nice results. Not many walls to hang prints on in the motorhome, but I will save the photo for the future. Thanks Bob
