These are some of my first tries at IR using an unmodified *istD and a cheap Opteka IR720 filter.

These look great! I'm happy to see someone else interested in IR. It's something I've wanted to get into since buying a book on it last year, but haven't checked to see if my K-5 will work with a IR filter. Is it as tough to do as they say since you have to frame the shot then put the filter on?

What type of exposure is needed?

Striking.
I'm curious about the exposure issue, too. Does the autoexposure work with the filter in place?

I don't think the K-5 will work for IR work, the older *istD series had weak IR blocking filters and Pentax has since made the newer cameras with stronger IR blocking filters. I could be wrong though.
Since my camera is unmodified and still has the IR blocking filter (cameras modified for IR have the IR blocking filter removed) I'm limited to slow shutter speeds even in midday sun, so I am shooting with a tripod which makes it easy to compose, focus, and then put the filter on. It's pretty easy for stationary subjects.

These were 1 second exposures with f/5.6 and iso 200. Shot with a tripod.

Since the IR720 filter blocks 99% of visible light, the camera's meter is useless. I just guessed my first shot and then adjusted exposure from it.

The Opteka filter is only $20 so it is pretty cheap to try and see if you like it.

I just ordered one of those cheaper Opteka filters, but if it works I would really like to upgrade to one of the nice Heliopan ones from the book I've got. From what I can tell from a basic test, the K-5 is still IR Sensitive. Apparently if you take a DSLR with liveview, put liveview on and change the color to monochrome, point a TV remote at it and push a button, you will see it light up on the screen like the pic in the attachment. And that is taken with my K-5 on my desk with my TV remote It might not be extremely efficient or effective, but it should at least give a decent image if taken with a long enough exposure.

Also for any golfers out there, check out this link to a few IR shots from this years masters:
