Butterfly close up
Lens: Panagor 90mm/f2.8 Camera: Pentax K-r Photo Location: Virginia
Posted By: loco, 05-25-2012, 06:21 PM

I have had the worst luck trying to shoot butterflies! It seems the evil critters have a thing against my camera. If I am not carrying it, they flutter all around my head. If I do have it with me, they won't let me get within 15 feet! So, I got a butterfly bush. Take that! The white ones and yellow ones and black ones still stay away so far, but this little orange guy, who I believe is an "aphrodite fritillary" butterfly, was most accommodating.

I used a YN560 flash and diffuser for this shot. Thanks for looking and I hope you like this!

I like the shot Lori and it reminds me to use the diffuser on my vivitar flash which I haven't for any of my macro shots.--charliezap

Lori, you really got some great detail and colors here and I think this is the first photo I have seen where you can see the eyes and proboscis so well. Your persistence really paid off for this photo, great job.

Beautiful! I had to laugh at your intro... I am heading out to find a butterfly bush for exactly the same reason. Wonderful Capture Lori.

Thanks so much, Charlie! I get lazy sometimes and don't use something on the flash, but always find better results with it.

That full frontal shot is simply amazing Lori. Beautifully captured and not the usual perspective. Hopefully the butterfly bushes will have tons of butterflies for you to document.
