Winter Elk
Posted By: sajmmiller, 01-19-2008, 01:36 PM

In the December monthly contest thread, some were requesting that more wildlife shots be posted here. So, in answer to that, here's some Elk photos from December 30th. All taken with the Tamron 70-300 LD Di at 300mm with tripod, and cropped to various degrees. Hope you like them.

Very nice photos Scott, I like all three of them. The only suggestion that I might have is to remove just a bit of green from # 2 and 3.

Take care, Heinrich

Howdy Mark,
Thanks for commenting! These were taken near the Buffalo River on Hwy 43 between Lost Valley and the Ponca bridge.

Hi Heinrich,
Thanks for your suggestion. I struggled a bit with the white balance on these and I didn't notice the second and third were too green until you mentioned it. I really appreciate your pointing it out.

Thanks again, Heinrich.
I replaced the 2nd and 3rd photos to remove the excessive green. Hopefully they are pretty close now.

I don't want to butt in on your Elk thread but thought I'd share this snap my Mom sent me the other day. It was taken by the barn just behind her house in Eastern Ontario. It is a wild creature that wandered in and apparently likes hanging with the horses.

Nice shots Scott. They look like they were keeping a close eye on you during the shoot.

Hey Jeff,
You can butt in on my threads anytime. What a crack up....an elk with an identity crisis! Thanks for sharing.

Thanks Peter! They were especially interested in my wife when she started walking around behind me. They are somewhat wary, but I also think they've become used to people stopping along the highway to look at them. The larger bulls tend to stay farther away and better hidden.
