Church Rock
Lens: 80-320mm Camera: K-5 Photo Location: Acoma, New Mexico
Posted By: Bob Harris, 05-29-2012, 09:59 PM

This is a handheld photo I took of Church Rock in very high winds, up to 60mph while camping on Navajo Nation land in New Mexico. I edited the photo using Picasa and added a little vignetting and softening to give a mystical feel. This is located just e/o Gallup NM off of I-40. Thanks for looking, Bob

Those striations in the rock, from top to bottom, show beautifully. Nice light, too. Great capture.

it's quite an unusual formation, all of sandstone with iron influences and other minerals to give the different colors. Thank you. Bob

CC, that Navajo name is Kin Litso Sinili, which means group of yellow houses. The largest radioactive spill occurred here in 1979 and not much press was given to the accident because it was on Indian Lands, I would imagine. It is said this is the 2nd worse spill ever in the world behind Chernobyl. Here is a link to the accident.

thank you Lori for taking a look, the sandstone is a little different color than many locations we have visited and changes to a yellow as the sun hits it.
