David & Goliath

This photo is of the California State bantamweight championship match between Rojelo Lara (left) and Rudy Villagonza. Although both only weighed about 110 lbs., the boxer on the right looks much bigger because of the camera angle. This was shot some time back in the early 70's, when I worked for the McClatchy News Services. I just recently had some of the negatives digitized. It was my first time doing so and I was amazed at the quality....and from Walgreens, no less!

Thanks for the comment. The exact exposure has long since been forgotten, although I do remember it was Plus-X pushed to the max. My intent was to capture the "gritty" feeling of the nature of boxing. The "little guy" on the left won, by the way. Twelve rounds, split decision. One of the most exciting fights I ever attended!

A good 'raw' shot of a classic scene. I think you did well to capture the moment and the emotion.

Raging Bull all over again.
Great to see some film shots here.
The angle is perfect...definitely deceptive.

Nice image.

Captures the controlled violence of the sport very well.
