Porcupine --- two interesting views
Lens: DA*300/4 Camera: K5
Posted By: jpzk, 06-03-2012, 03:56 PM

Late during the day ... about half hour before sunset at the marsh: saw this porcupine slowly making its way through the wetland to the tree line where I was.
Took lots of shots and just for fun, posting these two:

Up in the tree, munching fresh new leaves:

Details of the quills, seen from the back:

Photo location: close to home
ISO: varied with the different shots
Shutter speed: varied with shots
Aperture: varied with shots.

Just amazing! I have really only seen porcupines after they quill my dogs. Even though it cost me hundreds upon hundreds of dollars and a lot of pain for my pets, I still love to these guys (from afar!). Awesome photos... thanks so much for posting!

Well done--an uncommon and interesting subject, well captured! I only wish you'd gotten all of his tail in the first one.

Hmmmm ... I do see the entire tail in that first one.

An uncommon subject alright. Most people are scared of those animals.

Cheers!

Oh, yeah. My mistake--it's short and camouflaged by the branch.

That's unfortunate to read this! I always had dogs, until recently, and it would scare the heck out of me to see this!

Thanks for the comment!

That is one prickly critter. Love the shot of his face but the back shot showing those quills was really interesting.

Great pix...but I would of used at least a 1000 mm lens.

I've only seen one in the wild....about 50 feet off the side of a country road in Western Canada.

I checked it out first from a distance...with my 300 mm lens...it didn't move...I got closer...I realized it was dead. I was amazed at the huge size of it.

Sure has a figure of its own, doesn't it? I just realize that it has a rather square nose ...
The quills are indeed interesting and they do look quite "challenging".

Thanks!

You can approach a porcupine quite close actually. The problem is to find one and not make any noise. They can hear much better than I thought.

Too bad your find was a "dead issue" ! And yes, they are bigger than they look from distance.

Thanks for the reply.
