Pollinating/Feeding Frenzy
Lens: Sigma 70-300 macro Camera: K-5 Photo Location: Whitney On, Canada ISO: 400 Shutter Speed: 1/500s Aperture: F8
Posted By: normhead, 06-05-2012, 11:09 AM

After days of rain and cold temperatures, the temps gone up to day, the sun is out and the insects are making up for lost time, feeding and pollinating. This is the kind of day the Sigma 70-300 macro was made for.

Some of those lined up at the lunch bar.

Oh, the first shots are a little fuzzy on the sides, but the latter few are really nicely sharp with great colours. Well-composed shots, too. I really like that you can get so up close. Can even see the hairs on the bee's back!

One of the things you like about the Sigma is it only focuses from 6 feet away, so it looks like I got close, but I wasn't disturbing the insects. The bad thing is if I'd gotten closer for a shot with the Tamron 90 macro, they'd be even sharper, but I might not have gotten anything at all because I scared off my subject. It's the photographer's catch 22.

I really like them, but I'm not sure I want to look at them every day. But thanks.

Well I did say print and sell.... I think there is an audience for the butterfly shot as long as it isn't too bright. When it comes to what people want to look at all day, I can't begin to judge.

So far we are small enough we have rule... if we don't want it hanging on our wall if it doesn't sell, we don't print it. If we ever get to be more than bit players, maybe that will change.

You've mentioned the rule before and it is a good one. #3 will sell.
I'm also pretty sure your be more than bit players, if your intention is to grow the business.

Norm - you see there is a fan club for #3!

btw, which version of the sigma lens are you using as I see 5 listed in the lens database and they are quite different is their ratings?

Great series Norm. You really nailed these and I am also curious as to which lens you were using from the database. I'm thinking they are all reviews of the same lens maybe? Your photos could certainly be a sales pitch for the lens.
