Daughter's First DSLR shots
Lens: Pentax 55-300 Camera: K5 Photo Location: Shanghai
Posted By: Frogfish, 06-05-2012, 12:18 PM

Although now 23 and an avid P&S / mobile phone shooter, this is the first time she's been shooting with a DSLR. I gave her my spare K5 and put the 55-300 lens on it for her (I had a K5 with DA*300) and went looking for people, macro@300 and birds in the local park.

Her first efforts (the old lady is literally the first shot she took) :

She has an excellent eye for composition. # 7 is a wonderful shot...great bokeh, composition, colour rendition...I like it very much.

I would encourage her to continue to use a DSLR. Her first photo's indicate talent.

Well she is definitely on the right track! Some of those are really composed very well. Now just teach her the technical side so she can use the camera to the fullest

These are lousy, horrible, poor photos - and I'm not the least bit jealous (and I hope my sarcasm is apparent). Just shows you can learn composition skills on a simpler camera and move the thinking to a SLR. I hope she gets more time to use the camera.

Some of these are excellent shots, even for an experienced photographer! But I'm curious.... after getting results like that, does she want to do more? Or will she go back to the cell phone?

Thank you guys, very much appreciate all your lovely comments ! I showed her your posts and she was excited and motivated after reading them (after being mortified that I put her shots on-line) !

LOL @ MSL !

GJ - She really enjoyed herself and that's what matters no matter how the shots turned out. She can't wait to go again so one afternoon this week we'll hire a boat and try to get closer to that egret colony ! She is already talking about when she gets a more advanced camera and as she is already deeply involved in photography - but usually on the other side of the camera (she did a runway shoot in Cannes last month, plus video) and she also has an on-line vintage clothes store where she both models and shoots all her stock - there is no getting away from a DSLR future methinks !

Very discouraging.....her first outing and she is already ahead of me. With that kind of potential, you should let her keep that K5 and 55-300, she is a natural!
BTW-Otis loved #13..he said to be sure and tell her!
Regards!

Rupert - you think she's ready to tackle her first wedding shoot? Or even more challenging, is she good enough to shoot Otis?
