Lady slippers

Tess found these on a walk yesterday. We were afraid they'd be done soon, so when the sun came out she dragged me out, then distracted the dogs so I could shoot in peace. At least as much peace as you can be surrounded by when the air is full of black, deer, horse flies and mosquitos. So these are as far as we know the only orchids that grow in our area. You don't have to be surrounded by bugs while you look.

Lovely set of this strangely beautiful orchid. Been a few years since I've seen one, so I've enjoyed the view here. TFS.

Very nice - I could use a dog distractor too - ours SO like to get close to whatever i want them to stay back from. We get orchids somewhat like these but in yellow.

Very well done, Norm (as always) - the 3-D look is really fetching. Frankly, because I know nothing of botany, I thought orchids were cultured plants that only grow in big glass buildings.

Thanks for commenting sailor. I guess all orchids got their start somewhere, I'm guessing that many, from the big glass buildings have been so changed from their original state that they no longer have a natural home. But the orchids they were derived from, all came from somewhere.

I can't tell you how many times the dogs have destroyed our subjects. They step on them, grind their little feet and leave them half buried in the mud. Thanks to Tess, none of these relatively rare plants suffered that fate.

Norm, lovely shots. We managed to find some yellow lady slippers near Laird Hotsprings on our Alaska trip and a few pinks last month in Tennessee. Your photos turned out sooooo much better than mine. Gorgeous.
