Baby Wrens
Camera: K20D Photo Location: Greenville, SC
Posted By: GvilleRick, 06-19-2012, 03:14 PM

My wife went to water a plant hanging outside the kitchen window last week and a bird flew out. When we looked closer we saw a nest in the pot and have kept an eye on it. A few days ago we saw the first hatchling.

Here the mother is sitting on the eggs.

The first hatchling is seen here with the four remaining eggs. [Edit] This actually appears to be a brown-headed cowbird hatchling. Thanks to baro-nite for pointing this out after noticing the bright red mouth. These parasitic birds lay one egg in the nest and they tend to hatch earlier. Fortunately the other hatchlings did seem to get enough food and not allow the cowbird to eat everything.

Mom returns with a nice big spider. (or maybe dad, we saw two birds flying in to feed them.)

Ready to fly out and look for more food.

Returns with a smaller bug.

Apparently they need a balanced diet since the bugs varied greatly.

Checking on the babies.

With all five eggs hatched the babies are always hungry. [Edit] Note the different color in the mouth of this new hatchling.

Which means little down time for mom.

We have a good number here as well. The Carolina Wren is the state bird here in SC. The nest is only a foot or so from the kitchen window so we have been able to watch the parents come and go.

As luftfluss said, excellent shots. Really enjoyed watching the wrens. Also nice to see someone else from SC on the forum. We are few and far between.

Thanks. It has been fun shooting them and I hope to get more shots as they grow.

What part of SC are you located?

Columbia. We camp quite a bit at Devil's Fork and Oconee. Really love the area along with Huntington Beach in fall and winter.

I was shooting video this morning with my Canon SX30IS and took this shot of the parents working together to tear apart a spider to feed the hatchlings.

You're going to be so sad when the babies leave the nest.

Great series that.
I bet the wrens are happy to have that nice hanging basket prepared for them, but looks like the place have suffered.

Yeah, the plants are pretty well dead but we will replant later. The wrens are growing. It is interesting to see the first to hatch is a little over a day ahead of the others in development. Here are a couple of photos from today.
